From Vision to Strategy: Shaping DeSpray’s Future Business Model

The kick-off at DeSpray in Almelo (NL) marked the beginning of an exciting collaboration between the company and Team B in the fourth round of the Smart Solution Labs. Specializing in aerosol can recycling machines, DeSpray stands out with its ability to recover 100% of the liquid, gas, and metal contents of the cans. This is achieved by leftover waste being converted into energy, making the process sustainable and profitable. With growing demand for their machines, DeSpray is now seeking an innovative business model to scale effectively.

The diversity within Team B, comprising students with both economic and technical backgrounds, provides the ideal mix of expertise for a sophisticated, but creative solution. The challenge? The business model must adapt to locally changing regulations and diverse customer demands. However, this complexity has in no way dampened the team’s enthusiasm for the project. Their curiosity was evident in the sheer number of questions posed to Eelco Osse, one of DeSpray’s CEOs, who thoroughly addressed each one. His full engagement and willingness to embrace fresh perspectives set a collaborative tone for the weeks ahead.

Beyond the project itself, the CEO provided insight into the company’s facility, history and mission to create genuine social and environmental impact. Inspired by the tour and energized by lunch, Team B turned its focus toward the next eight weeks. Brainstorming first ideas and structuring their approach, they have laid a strong foundation for a high-quality outcome.
