The final presentation of Team B in the Smart Solution Labs marked a very special occasion, as they presented the results of eight weeks of work as guests during the mid-term presentation of the Smart Solution Semester (3S) at the Hogeschool Saxion, where a second group was equipped with the same task: sorting out those spray cans, which are highly explosive and can therefore not be recycled in DeSpray’s recycling machine.
Team B took advantage of their group size and split up to research in two different directions. On one hand, the general concept of the sorting machine was developed, while reaching out to possible manufacturers of the system all over the world. On the other hand, the team focused on the performance enhancement of the visual AI system used to identify non-permitted cans. Through appropriate hardware, including lighting, cameras, and computational power, the system is becoming more reliable and redundant in changing environmental conditions. The results are now forwarded to the group in 3S, offering the opportunity to continue the work.
Team B has created a valuable momentum for the ongoing development of a safer and more efficient recycling process. Their insights will accelerate the path toward a fully automated and scalable solution for DeSpray.
